Inside the Code Icon Lab

Experiments, prototypes and technologies we are currently exploring — a live look at what is on the bench and what we are learning from it.

The lab runs on a simple rule: a prototype a week, an honest writeup a month. Not every experiment becomes a product. Most do not. The point is to find the ones that should — and to learn, in public, from the ones that should not.

On the bench right now

  • LAB-19 — Autonomous factory triage: a vision + rules hybrid that halts a line seconds before a defect cascade.
  • LAB-24 — Agentic operations console: a reasoning layer that files, resolves and explains its own tickets.
  • LAB-31 — Ambient sensor cartography: a building that draws its own live floorplan from 900 low-power nodes.
  • LAB-36 — Generative interface kit: interfaces that recompose themselves around the task in front of them.

What we are learning

Three patterns keep repeating across otherwise unrelated experiments. We treat them as working hypotheses, not conclusions.

Constraints are a design tool. A 12ms latency budget forced architectural decisions that improved accuracy too.— LAB-19

First, the model is the easy part. The hard part is the surrounding system — the tools, the telemetry, the guardrails. Second, shipping the prototype is the research; a working artifact in production teaches things no offline experiment can. Third, the edge and the cloud are not rivals. The interesting systems are loops between them.

What is next

The next quarter is about autonomy with accountability — agents that do real work, then explain themselves well enough that a human is willing to let them. We will keep posting the dispatches here while the work is still warm.
